Isaiah 51:1-3

“Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug.” vs. 1

Even in our entertainment driven, sports crazed, celebrity worshipping culture, people will–from time to time–turn their thoughts to God and try to figure out whether there is some meaning in life beyond drugs, alcohol, and sex. In other words, they start thinking about spiritual things and may even seek some system of belief that will help them make sense of this universe. And there are plenty of options! New religions are springing up all over the place, each with great marketing and plenty of answers for life’s persistent questions. The prophet had an interesting response to the folks in his day who were wondering what to make of their uncertain post-exilic future. He says, “Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug.” Those words ooze wisdom and are certainly applicable to our confusing times. There isn’t some new thing to be invented by human minds that is going to give answers to all the hard questions! Rather, the important stuff has already been developed and we already know all we need to know about life and God. That truth is wrapped up in the life and teachings of Jesus. If that seems a simple answer, so be it. As most everyone knows, the things we learned in kindergarten are all we really need to know!

Thought for the Day: Which rock was I hewn from?
