Empowering Women WELCA Retreat ~ Fall 2022
Featured speakers at the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) Grand Canyon Synod retreat include: Rev. Dr. Meghan Aelabouni, who will lead a Bible study via Zoom from Jerusalem, Rev. Rebecca Boardman, University of Arizona Campus Ministries; and Carolyn Tonneson, with Peter’s Hope/Bamburi Women’s Empowerment Center (Mombasa, Kenya, Africa).
On-site Chaplain is Rev. Rebecca Boardman from University of Arizona Campus Ministry in Tucson. Rev. Dr. Meghan Aelabouni will lead participants in a Bible study (directly from Jerusalem). Additional speakers include Carolyn Tonneson, sharing about the Bamburi Women’s Empowerment program in Mombasa, Kenya, and Shari Jones from Lord of Life in Sun City, Arizona, introducing the group to Days for Girls, a program that keeps girls in school by providing reusable menstrual supplies. Participants will hear stories from Latina and Navajo sisters. They also will hear how the I-Help program from Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest helps women experiencing homelessness.
All meals are buffet style and served in the Richard Andersen Gathering Place at Spirit in the Desert. Program begins after a 6:00 pm dinner on Friday evening and concludes at 4:00 pm on Saturday. Activities include music, a Prayer Room, a Friday evening “afterglow,” and much more. Carolyn Tonneson is expected to bring items to sell from the women in Mombasa, Kenya.
