John 15:26-27, 16:4b-6…“You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.” vs. 27

After Jesus had departed from this earth, it’s likely that the disciples were regularly questioned about his life and ministry. And, as Jesus had predicted, they had opportunity to testify about what he had said and done. It’s unlikely that any of them had been taking notes so they were forced to rely on their memory; and since they’re like us, it wasn’t always easy for them to remember what had happened. Frankly, there were times when they likely weren’t paying that much attention! Jesus seems to have had to tell them some of the same things over and over again. They needed help to be sure that the right things became a part of their testimony. And that’s where the Holy Spirit proved to be their most reliable Advocate or Counselor. Often they didn’t know what to say–but the Spirit gave them the words. That continues to be how it works with us. Often we can’t remember the proper verses or stories as we talk to people about the good news. Our memories aren’t that good. But that’s no reason for silence! The promised Holy Spirit continues to be a part of our lives and when the opportunity to speak arrives, the Spirit of Truth will give us fitting words. Many times we’ll even surprise ourselves by saying things that we didn’t even know that we knew. Once we start to talk, the words mysteriously appear…and blessings abound!

Thought for the Day: Times the Spirit has given me words!
