2 Samuel 7:1-7

Nathan said to the king, ‘Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.’” vs. 3

Initially the prophet Nathan was only echoing what political sycophants have done for millennia. He told King David to do whatever he wanted to do because the Lord was with him. Folks in position of power love to get that kind of encouragement. That’s why politicians choose cabinets and advisory teams who tell them exactly what they want to hear…and it’s scary to see how often those leaders end up believing that God will rubber stamp whatever they want to have done. They say or do whatever they desire and then tell their followers that God has been their director…and sometimes they even believe their own deceptions! Fortunately for David, Nathan was a different breed of prophet and dared to speak a contrary word to the king. What a blessing such prophets are among us! In reality it’s hard for any of us to discern whether the Lord is with us in our decision making. Often we’ll crave God’s direction but ultimately most of us end up doing whatever it is that we want….which is not a bad thing! The mistake is not the making of a decision…our error comes when we start believing that the decision we’ve made is God’s will. Most of the time we just don’t have that degree of insight…unless of course, we’ve got a Nathan who can tell us the truth!

Thought for the Day: Who is my Nathan?
