Romans 8:18-25“For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” vss. 24-25

The longer we live the more likely it is that we will experience the deaths of friends and family members. And when that happens we are always grateful to be able to offer words of comfort to those who grieve. And when the comforting words are directed to us, it feels good to know that others understand the pain of loss.

It’s natural in those moments for our minds to be drawn to consideration of our own future. We begin to wonder how many years we have left and what our endings will be like. And we may even begin to think about the shape of the new life that is our hope in Christ Jesus.

There are those who love to speculate on the nature of that life. They’d really like to know what happens as they “pass away” and “pass through” the pearly gates. We’d like our hope to have substance!

But Paul told the Romans that hope that is seen is not hope. In Christ our future is secure but there’s just no way for us to know what it is like! Our hope is to patiently wait, confident that whatever the new life is like, it’s going to bring perfect peace. In other words, it will be worth the wait!

Thought for the Day: What do I wonder about the future?
