“For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch.” vs. 1
In recent weeks we’ve been reading about the city of Jerusalem and the controversy that has erupted over whether it should be recognized as the capital of Israel, given that it is also the most important city in the Palestinian territories. Of course this isn’t the first time Jerusalem has been in the news. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world and through its long history has been the center of what seems like unending conflict. The prophet, writing after its destruction by the Babylonians, sees its restoration as a sign of God’s continuing love and a reminder of God’s faithfulness. For Christians Jerusalem has been a pilgrim destination for centuries with thousands traveling each year to tour its holy places. As such it helps to connect with the historical roots of our faith…but it’s not a substitute for Jesus. For us the dwelling place of God is not in a city or a temple but in the hearts of believers. Together those believers make up the Body of Christ and represent the continuing presence of Jesus in the world. The Church is the new Jerusalem and stands as a shining reminder of God’s love. We are the vindication of Zion and in us the nations will see the glory of God.
