Psalm 138“The LORD will fulfil his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.” vs. 8

If we care at all about this world and our place in it, we will more than likely wonder about our purpose. Since none of us receive instruction books at birth many will feel as though they are having to make things up as the years fly by. Surely, they think to themselves, there has to be a purpose in all of this. Occasionally we’ll even think we’ve got it figured out, but then stuff happens and our carefully made plans fall apart like a cheap suit.

The psalmist suggests that worrying about our purpose in life is a waste of time, because what’s really important is God’s purpose for us. And by faith he believed that the Lord’s purpose would be fulfilled in his life.

And how did he know this? Well, he connects the Lord’s purpose with the Lord’s steadfast love. Our love connection with God means that God uses us to fulfill our common purpose. So rather than obsess about our purpose, it’s far more productive to simply stay connected to the Divine Presence. When that connection is nurtured and maintained we don’t even need to think about our purpose. Surrounded by the love of God we will simply live into it. And God’s will will be done!
