Just for Women Veterans…

Spirit in the Desert and the Institute for Healing of Memories began workshops for women veterans only in 2017. Why? To answered a “call” from so many women in the military who have been subjected to Military Sexual Trauma (MST). The statistics on this kind of trauma are astounding and heart-wrenching; the fact is that it happens not just in combat overseas and far from home, it is also right here on our military bases, and it affects women of all ages, all ethnicities, and all ranks. Click here for some of the latest information released on MST and other abuses women experience in our military.

While on hiatus and not able to hosts guests at Spirit in the Desert, the Institute for Healing of Memories and Spirit in the Desert have teamed up to offer a 4-our virtual workshop for women veterans. The same experienced retreat leaders — in this case, Sheila Laughton — and the same techniques are incorporated into this virtual session via Zoom. Good news! Women veterans can be part of this unique experience from wherever they are, both physically and emotionally, through the miracle of technology.

Sheila Laughton (USAF, Ret.) was a career Intelligence and Force Management officer who served from the Vietnam Era to 2000. She deployed to Saudi Arabia for the first Gulf War.

After her military retirement, Sheila founded Welcome Home for veterans of all eras and their families, at the Loyola Spirituality Center in Minnesota. This unique program addressed challenging reintegration issues such as trauma, moral injury, life purpose, from a spiritual perspective.

She has worked with men and women who have experienced or witnessed trauma in her decade of experience as a Healing of Memories Workshop facilitator and now as a facilitator trainer.

Sheila has Masters degrees in Guidance and Counselling from Creighton University, and in Theology from St. Catherine University. A lifelong student, she is currently researching how personality affects resilience, cultural anthropology and spirituality. She has been married to her USMC/AF veteran husband for 45 years and has both an Air Force and Army son.
